Chef Owners Jeff McInnis and Janine Booth both found successful careers in kitchens throughout Miami before deciding to venture to New York to bring their love of Southern cuisine to the Big Apple. The settled on the up and coming Alphabet City neighborhood, what was once a crime ridden area now boasts unique eateries and a quaint neighborhood charm. Jeff and Janine both did stints on Top Chef as well as have several James Beard nods between them including Jeff securing 2013 Best Chef South.
Root & Bone has a lot of charm tucked into a small space that Jeff fully rehabbed. They stick to the "farm to table" mentality working with "local" farmers to source seasonal items while staying true to a Southern inspired menu. Their flagship dish is the Sweet Tea Brined and Lemon Dusted Fried Chicken drizzled with Spiked Tabasco Honey. This is worth the trek alone. Another unique dish they offer is their Braised Short Rib Meatloaf which is a self-professed mistake that turned out to be a great dish.
Jeff and Janine put a fun spin on Southern classics and also offer a brunch that is not to be missed. They are also doing great things with their cocktail list; two of my favorites were the Colonel's Daughter: 100 Proof Bourbon, Preserved Peaches, Amaro Montenegro, and Rosemary as well as the Green Acre: Sweet Grass Gin, Green Grape, Honey, and Field Greens. Think of a healthy green smoothie with refreshing gin...
The ICCA held a tasting here during the Brooklyn & NYC Immersion in April and we also hosted a cocktail reception here during another small event in April.
