Tamarind is an unsuspecting spot tucked away in a tired shopping strip in the Winter Park area of Greater Orlando. The interior is warm and inviting and the staff and management take great pride in offering a comfortable, neighborhood spot with good food at great prices.
Our server was excellent and we never wanted for anything. He walked us through the menu giving wonderful recommendations and explanations. We started with two of the Naan breads, one brushed with melted butter, the other stuffed with melted cheese. Both were warm and bubbly, served with a trio of sauces for dipping. For an appetizer we had the Hariyali Tikki: small fried potato cakes seasoned with mint, cilantro, and green chiles served with a house made yogurt sauce.
For main courses we each selected a different entrée and ate family style as the portions were extremely generous. The Jhinga Tandoor were sizzling shrimp served on a cast iron skillet on a bed of onions and bell peppers with lemon wedges. The shrimp were marinated in yogurt, chilies, cilantro and flavored with oregano seeds. The Chicken Tikka was served similarly and prepared by marinating in yogurt, ginger, garlic and spices, and then cooked in clay oven. The Roganjosh was my personal favorite; tender Lamb pieces cooked in red curry flavored with fennel and saffron served with a bowl of Jasmine rice.
The most interesting dish and the table favorite was the Masala Dosa. We were all very intrigued when the dish arrived and the manager came by and explained how this dish is traditionally eaten. You tear a small section of the large, crisp flatbread and fill it with the seasoned potatoes and peas along with a sauce we can only determine was some kind of sesame/yogurt/hummus-like amalgamation. You take a bite and then take a sip of the curried broth from a cup served on the plate. The flavors were absolutely wonderful and the presentation was great! See picture below.
