Gansevoort Market has overtaken a large, former warehouse-turned-night club space in the Meatpacking District in Manhattan's Lower West Side just a side step from the High Line. The market is a corroboration of food stands with a central focus: fresh food. The unique booths and food offerings is a foodie's dream. I found myself aimlessly wandering up and down the aisles having the most difficulty in not deciding what to eat, but deciding how much I could logically eat.
We finally settled on Cappone's and Luzzo's. Cappone's touts itself as an Italian Specialty & Salumeria spot operating in NYC since 1969. We went for the Napoli and the Cappone sandwiches. All of the meats for your sandwich are sliced before you to order on their big, red shiny slicer by a gentlemen who looks like a double from Goodfellas. The Napoli consisted of fresh Italian white bread with Prosciutto di Parma, soppressata, fresh mozzarella, sweet roasted peppers, and olive spread. The Cappone was served on a multi-grain focaccia with capicola, soppressata, salami, provolone, arugula, mozzarella, and hot peppers. Every sandwich is slathered with extra virgin olive oil and a light drizzle of crema di balsamic before being piled high with the fillings.
For seconds, even thought we could barely finish our sandwiches, we stepped over to Luzzo's for some authentic Italian coal-fired pizza. They carry your staple favorites but they also have some specialty pies to choose from by the slice. We went for the sausage and peppers as well as the prosciutto and arugula. The crust was perfectly crispy and bubbly. The sauce had a great flavor but didn't overpower the slice and the toppings and cheeses were evenly distributed.
