Boone's has been a staple restaurant on Portland, Maine's wharf since 1898 and is recognized as the creator of the Maine stuffed baked lobster. In 2013, Chef Hardin Lee Smith purchased Boone's and is leading the restaurant into a new era while still delivering Maine classics. Chef Smith is a Maine native and after completing his culinary degree at the CIA, apprenticing in Venice, and working in several restaurants in Maui; he decided to return to his Maine roots. The restaurant has been slightly remodeled but still retains it's historic wharf charm.
The ICCA Board held their Annual Board & Sponsor Dinner here in June 2015 during the 13th Annual ICCA Summit. For the menu that evening, we did the traditional lobster bake and must say it was a fantastic presentation.
For hors d'oeuvres, we began with the oyster meatballs, fish cakes, and stuffed mushrooms. The oyster meatballs were truly unique. For the dinner, we began with their traditional, creamy Maine Clam Chowder followed by a salad of Farmer's Market Greens. For the "Maine" course, servers placed trays of Clam Steamers, sweet corn, steamed red potatoes, and house Kielbasa on special racks. Next, the servers came through the dining room with large, wooden planks lined with steamed lobsters on a bed of seaweed and placed them on the racks. The presentation was excellent and the lobster bibs added a fun touch.
